My philosophy

wise saying Sokrates

Axel Harzer

It is no secret that having fun is the best motivation to learn new things although a lot of teachers do not stick to this simple rule. On the other hand, it is only fair to say that having fun does not mean the same to everyone and perception is something very individual too. Thus one can have fun while the others only suffer. Nevertheless it cannot be denied that fun is the key to sustainable success. Have a closer look at books by Vera Birkenbihl, Manfred Spitzer or Gerald Hüther and you will find a lot of additional ideas.

Let us define motivation as a permanent stimulus to deal with the subject matter.

This means to speak in the first place. It is not so important if a word is missing or a tense form is used incorrectly - as long as it does not change the meaning of the sentence it is acceptable. It is clear that mistakes can and should be corrected but it should not stifle the inclination to speak. This is the reason why I continuously search for new topics which give an incentive for active participation. Simple role plays, movies, music, art, philosophy, or even family stories, everything can be used for discussion. Everyone has the ability to join in a vivid conversation, no matter what former teachers had said.

I agree that it is not always easy to find the right button but it is worth searching for it. Comments like "I made a lot of contacts during my holidays" or "Now I am not afraid to communicate in a foreign language in public" give evidence that it works. And it is fun, too!
